Designed in 1925 by the architect Peter Gannon on a natural green terrace and situated at an altitude of 700 metres, the Golf Club Alpino is located in one of the most characteristic areas of Lago Maggiore. The golf club was originally run by the expert golf instructor Francesco Pasquali who was also the 1925 and 1926 winner of the Open d'italia (which Golf Club Alpino had the honour of hosting). Mr. Pasquali retired after fifty years of service, passing the position onto his son Giacomo, also a golf instructor. The course has remained unchanged with the exception of some modifications made necessary by the demands of a Golf Club undergoing continuous expansion.

Golf Club Des Iles Borromées is situated in a beautiful alpine setting 600 metres above sea level. When playing the course, golfers can also enjoy spectacular views of the Sempione and Val Grande mountains. From the 18th hole tee, on a clear day, one can see the skyline of Milan, Lago Maggiore, Lago di Varese, Monate and Comabbio as well as the Ticino Alps. But the natural flora is the real highlight. Birches flank the entire course along with pine trees, ash and larch trees mixed with oak and holm oak and chestnut trees. Golfers can even find Mikado thuies on hole 12. The course is open throughout the year except for January. Summer temperatures never go above 85° and there is almost always a slight breeze. In late winter the sun warms many of the south-facing holes.

The history of Golf Club Piandisole dates back to the summer of 1962 when a group of friends, all holidaying in the near-by village of Premeno, decided to build a golf course. Two years later, the first 9 holes (all par three) were built. In the meantime, plans to improve the structure, especially the Club House began in 1966. Ten years later, the course was transformed into a regulation 9 hole course. Golf Club Piandisole is a challenging alpine course which attracts many tournaments. In addition it is scenically breathtaking with a beautiful view of both Lago Maggiore and Monte Rosa, one of the highest mountains in Europe.

This splendid golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Europe because it is surrounded by century old forests and mountains. Its terrain is slightly ripply and its small lakes make Castelconturbia seductive not only because of its spectacular natural environment but also because of its technical characteristics. There are three courses - Red, Yellow and Blue - and each one is equally challenging. The various degrees of difficulty depend on the tee off area which makes it possible for the high handicap player to also enjoy these courses. The fact that the Italian Open will be held here in 1998 (as in 1991) indicates that this Club also has courses that offer highly skilled golfers a competitive environment in which to play and show their skills. The Club also offers every convenience, all in close proximity to the courses: a large and attractive Club House with guest rooms, an excellent restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and a gym. Its driving range and two putting greens are located directly behind the caddie master area.

Designed by the American Robert von Hagge, the Circolo Golf Bogogno stretches over two championship 18 hole, par 72 courses and combines technical features of a high standard with the breathtaking natural beauty of the place: 220 hectares of uncontaminated terrain that include woods, lakes and streams, a majestic view over Monte Rosa and a mild climate. The Club House is centrally positioned with regard to the two courses and has a large putting green. The double driving range with its "approach area" is situated nearby. The elegant Club House has been designed along the lines of the local country houses in the district. There are 150 residential units divided up into three distinct zones with villas measuring from 120 to 280 square metres and semi-detached villas measuring up to 100 square metres, all with private gardens, garages and panoramic views. The Bogogno Golf Academy organizes lessons for beginners and expert players. Particular attention is dedicated to youngsters for whom the Academy organizes collective courses.

Eighteen holes set among woods, ponds and the Prealps in the background with majestic horizons dominated by Monte Rosa, Golf Club Dei Laghi is one of the more interesting courses to come on the Italian golf scene in the last several years. Hence its slogan "discover it while it's becoming famous". Designed by Piero Mancinelli, the course was founded as a championship course suitable for professional or high level amateur players. But beginners or high handicappers are now welcome as recent alterations have created more flexibility thus allowing players of all levels to enjoy this course. The first several holes have wide fairways that invite long hitters to "let go", keeping a careful eye on the many water hazards and bunkers that protect the greens. Players then move onto a more wooded area where fairways narrow and perspectives change, requiring players to carefully gauge and control their shots.

In the early nineties Jack Nicklaus found about 70 hectares of level ground between Olgiate and Solbiate Olona that without a doubt by digging and sculpturing was destined to be Le Robinie golf course. Thus he created a masterpiece of hills, terraces, bunkers and lakes, unmistakably the mark of the "Golden Bear". There are more then a hundred of his courses throughout the world, but Le Robinie is the only one in Italy and is already considered one of the best in Europe. Nicklaus, a true perfectionist, modified and corrected most of the 18 holes until he reached his goal: to create a demanding but not "punishing" course where it is possible for golfers of all levels from beginners to professionals to play (there are five tee off areas for every hole) and enjoy themselves.

In 1897, the original Golf Club Varese opened in a park surrounding the Grand Hotel Excelsior, today the seat of the regional head of the national government. For a short time the Golf Club moved to picturesque Valganna and in 1934 it moved to its present location in Luvinate. Originally a 9 hole course, it was enlarged in the 1950's to 18 holes, par 72. The Club House was originally a Benedectine monastery built in the 12th century. Recent restoration has made the atmosphere both warmer and more comfortable. For competitions, Golf Club Varese is among the top clubs in Italy both for team and single play and one of few courses that has won the Gold Star from the Italian Olympic Committee. The hospitality of its members, the professionalism of the staff, the uniqueness of the Club House and the course challenge make a visit to this Club an unforgettable experience.
